No 10 of my top 21 of Extinct Animals

I really just had to put this bird up since it is my favourite extinct bird of all time (exceptions to the Huia and all extinct birds in New Zealand though). It is extinct and has a good history in New Zealand. It describes characters of the NZ fauna. Home of the birds. It used to eat moas, pitty I didnt put that bird on my list. It has a good history in the South Island. In a part of the Ice Age it was found in the South Island and a part of the North Island but after the Ice Age went the South Island population was still there but there was no birds in the North Island of New Zealand. It had maori names and one of them was pauakai. It is the biggest eagle that history has shown in every time of countless historic records. Its wingspan was 3 metres wide. Hows that for a gigantic eagle. There is one on the front of this blog as well as a picture of a pair of Huia. Up at this blog right now under the heading of **Sunday the 24th of Febuary 2007** is a couple of photos of this giant but amazing bird that is my favourite bird of all time ... not including the South Island Kaka, the South Island Kokako or the Paradise Shellduck. These photos are of another 1 chasing and scaring moa and the second one is of a size comparison of the Haast Eagle, the largest eagle alive and one of its relatives.
